Discussion

This chapter focuses on communication in marriage as it relates to various personalities and how spouses communicate with each other. Behavior modification is necessary to cope with problems and concerns that arise in the marriage. Both partners need to be aware of behavior adjustments they can make in problematic situations, for improvement’s sake. This is where openness and honesty come into play.

Objectives

Upon review of this chapter, the participants will achieve the following objectives:

1. Describe different situations in which communication can break down in a marriage

2. List nonverbal traits that are often observed in your spouse’s behavior, leading to a breakdown in communication

3. Make note of indicators of personality traits that lead to communication problems in a marriage

4. Describe the various modes of verbal and nonverbal communication that may have a positive or negative impact on a marriage

5. Create short-range goals in five-year increments for improving communication in your marriage, up to twenty years out

1. How can verbal and nonverbal communication traits break down harmony in a marriage?

2. Where is the indicator of guilt that can bring about immediate resolution in a marital problem?

3. How does the tone of your voice determine the outcome of a conflict?

4. List five ways that you have been able to reconcile differences based upon miscommunication.

5. Have you established short- and long-range communication goals? What are they?
